a I was a counselor at a summer camp. The Hiroshima bombing was announced, everyone went off to the next activity. I was so appalled both by the event and lack of reaction that I went off alone to the woods for a few hours. I have felt the same ever since.

b In August 2019, shortly before Hiroshima Day, the Trump administration abrogated the INF Treaty, claiming that the Russians had violated it, a claim widely reported and taken to be obviously true, as perhaps it is. Rarely mentioned is that the Russians have long claimed that US ABM installations on the Russian border violate the treaty, a claim taken seriously enough by US scientists so that the authoritative Bulletin of Atomic Scientists devoted a lead article to expounding it. In a sane world, the paired claims would lead to negotiations, investigation by independent experts, and renewal of this crucially important treaty. Not in our world.

c The deal was abrogated by Trump in May 2019 over the strong objections of all other signers, who vowed to carry on with the agreement, but who cannot in the face of overwhelming US power and threats.
